Why I Made This Square

We live in a world full of throwaway, cheap tools, ones you’re not even sure will work when you buy them...and I’m tired of it.

I want tools to be something I can trust. Something that makes me smile when I pick it up. A tool that reminds me of when they were built to last, and when people took real pride in the work that they did with them. Even the finish is chosen with longevity in mind, a ceramic coating that protects the steel and wood without hiding the natural beauty.

What started it? I have a hammer that was my Grandad Bill’s. He was a REME engineer stationed in Egypt during WWII. He came from a generation that got the job done with what they had, no matter what. He was the first person on his street to own a television, not because he bought one, but because he built it from scratch, vacuum tubes and all.

His initials, WT, are carved into the head of that hammer. I think of him every time I pick it up.

That’s what I want this square to be. Not a tool that gets boxed up or hung on the wall, never to be used, but a tool that builds, and one that lasts.

Vintage hammer engraved with initials WT — inspiration for 345 Square

One day, someone will pick this up and say:
“This was my dad’s.”
And they’ll see the marks. The wear. The proof of your work.

That’s what we’re building here.
A square that connects them to you, long after the job’s done.

People keep asking me if this square is too pretty to use. My answer? That’s exactly why you should."
